Town North Nissan can help you learn why your car shakes when idling.
One of the worst feelings is when you notice your car shudder when driving. Is it a tire puncture, did that pothole break my suspension, or do I have a busted driveshaft? There are many things that might be the cause of your car shaking, and the amount of the potential damage can fluctuate greatly. The most likely cause of the shuddering usually happens in the vicinity of your vehicle’s tires and wheels. They plant the car to the road, and if anything is out of alignment, will feel it. More seriously, it could be a broken transmission or a broken control arm. These more severe part failures might leave you with a broken can on the side of the road.

If you got new tires recently, your vehicle shaking could be caused by the tires not getting balanced correctly. Balancing the tires makes sure the weight is evenly distributed for the smoothest drive possible. If you feel the tire vibration while you are driving, it could very well be a tire that is no longer balanced properly. If the tires and wheels are balanced, but your car is still shaking, make sure the lugnuts are fully tightened, and ensure the tires are inflated to the correct air pressure. If you find that your tires are causing the vibration, you should get it looked at immediately.
If your vehicle shakes when you brake, that is a pretty strong gauge that you might want to have the brakes checked out. The most obvious reason for your steering wheel vibration is warped rotors. When a driver pushes down on the brake pedal, brake pads squeeze the brake rotors to bring your vehicle to a stop. A smooth brake rotor surface will give you smooth braking. A warped surface will cause vibrations when braking, like how a brick road feels rougher than an asphalt highway. Other possible causes of the vibrating include frozen calipers and damaged shocks. If you notice your steering wheel begin to wobble, bring it to us, and we’ll check it out.
If your car is shuddering before you ever start driving, then you probably have some broken parts. The most common causes of a vehicle shaking in idle are:
Broken Driveshaft – If not perfectly balanced or damaged, it could be the source of the vibrations
Failed CV joints – Working in conjunction with the drive shaft, cv joints get the engine power to the wheels and, if they are failing, can be the source of the car shaking in idle.
Broken Engine Mounts – As the name suggests, these components help affix the engine to the vehicle. If they get damaged or broken, it can allow your engine to vibrate.
If you have realized there is a shudder in your vehicle, then bring it in, and we’ll inspect it for any trouble spots. Our knowledgeable techs will find the reason for the vibration and get you back on the road.
