What is a regular cab vs extended cab?
It feels like no matter where you look, pickups are everywhere. The times when trucks were built only for work are in the past. These days, pickups can be optioned to be as luxurious as the most well-known brands from Germany. So, no matter if you want to cruise in style or need a workhorse, there is a pickup for you. After deciding if you must have 4WD (or just Rear-Wheel Drive), the next big decision is to decide what cab type is best for you and your needs.
A regular cab truck has one row of seating with limited storage space and legroom, as the name implies. A regular cab was once the one way to buy pickups. In many regular cabs, the seats almost touch the rear part of the cab. This style is the practical version of a pickup truck and usually comes with manual locks and windows. A regular cab is a work truck, not for hauling your family and friends.
As one could probably guess, an Extended Cab (can also be called a Double Cab pickup truck) is basically a Regular Cab with more area behind the front seating. When first introduced, extended cab pickup trucks were available as 2-door models and only had small rear jump seats available. Now sometimes known as a Double Cab pickup truck, these trucks now have a second row of small doors for access to the rear cargo area. Despite having 2 rows of seats, an Extended Cab truck wouldn’t be the ideal choice for road trips, even though it can haul more passengers.
While not as apparent as the other cab models, a Crew Cab pickup boasts four regular-size doors and the space to transport, well, your whole ‘crew.’ Crew Cab pickups are designed to haul more stuff and-or passengers. For some people, these styles of pickup trucks have replaced the standard 4-door sedan as the family vehicle. A Crew Cab pickup’s larger size and more powerful engines are unmatched in the sedan world while still providing the rear-seat legroom and comfort that families need.
